Wind turbines in Norway have got an undeserved bad reputation, or is it actually deserved? For the development of wind farms at the expense of human rights, such as the wind farm at Fosen. Development of such parks also comes at the expense of nature, because it is being built down, which in turn affects wildlife. In other words, wind turbines on land are a rather serious and complicated matter.
Large wind farms exist to benefit the community, through more accessible renewable electricity for households and industry. But what if people themself could benefit from the wonderful wind, without harming nature and wildlife. Then the reputation of the windmill might have been a little better? What if we could become energy producers ourselves? What if we could own our own small windmill that transformed wind into clean renewable electricity?
For this to be applicable, you should have a cabin or house located in an area that is exposed to moderate to high amounts of wind. If you have this, the acquisition of your private wind turbine will be able to produce large amounts of clean electricity for many years to come. We believe there are at least thirteen reasons why it is smart to have your own windmill, and here they are:
1. Reduce the electricity bill
Wind energy is a free resource, and by investing in your own windmill you can produce your own electricity. This means you can cut down on your electricity bill.
2. Become energy independent
With your own wind turbine, you become less dependent on public electricity suppliers and price fluctuations on the energy market. This gives you greater freedom and predictability when it comes to energy costs, which is especially important in times of rising energy prices.
3. Sustainable energy production
Wind energy is clean and renewable. When you produce your own electricity from the wind, you help to reduce the use of fossil fuels and thus cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. This is a big win for both the environment and future generations.
4. Perfect with sun
A windmill complements solar panels perfectly. This is because wind and sun have opposite strengths and weaknesses. Solar panels are most efficient in the middle of the day in the summer months and poor in the evening/night and in winter. Whereas a windmill is the opposite. Best when it is cloudy, and often in the morning, evening and night, and preferably in winter. In other words, a combination of wind and sun will be absolutely ideal for those who want to use renewable energy.
5. High power production
If you have good conditions for producing electricity from the wind, a windmill will be very effective. A normally large wind turbine for private use usually produces between 1 and 2 kW per hour under good wind conditions. Over the course of a year, a privately owned mini-windmill can thus produce up to several thousand kW. This can correspond to virtually all the electricity needs of an average Norwegian house, apart from heating.
6. High degree of efficiency
A windmill has a higher degree of efficiency than, for example, solar panels, where the latter usually has an efficiency degree of between 20 and 25 per cent, while a wind turbine is usually between 30 and 40 per cent. What this means is that a windmill is better at converting wind into usable electricity than a solar panel is at converting sunlight into electricity.
7. Fits well with batteries
A wind turbine placed where there are good - if not perfect - conditions for wind can produce a lot of energy for you. Maybe so much that it's stupid that the energy goes to waste. In this sense, a wind turbine together with a battery pack can be a very good investment. Excess energy can then be stored in batteries, which you use when you need it.
8. Long-term financial savings
Although an initial investment is required to install a wind turbine, you can save significant sums in the long term. After the turbine's costs have been repaid, you are effectively producing free electricity, and any excess can even be sold back to the grid in some areas or stored on batteries, if you have them.
9. Increased value of the property
Installing a wind turbine on your property can increase its value. For many buyers, a home that is already equipped with renewable energy sources such as wind power is very attractive. This can make the property more competitive in the market.
10. Minimal environmental impact
Wind energy has a very low environmental impact compared to other energy sources. Wind turbines do not require water resources and do not produce emissions that pollute the air. In addition, they can be placed on existing agricultural areas without significantly disturbing the use of the land.
11. Reliable and stable energy source
Wind can be a reliable source of energy in many areas. Technological advances have made wind turbines more efficient, so that they can produce electricity even at low wind speeds. This means that you can have a stable energy supply all year round, as long as you have good conditions for wind.
12. Less maintenance
Modern wind turbines are designed to be durable and require relatively little maintenance. Most turbines have a lifespan of over 20 years, and with regular inspection and minor adjustments, they can produce electricity efficiently for decades. They are also made for wind – of course, which means that they are very robust and can withstand both strong gusts and a lot of wind. After all, that's what they're made for.
13. Contribute to the green shift
By producing your own wind power, you are part of the green shift needed to meet future energy needs in a sustainable way. You are taking an important step towards reducing your carbon footprint and contributing to a greener future for society as a whole.
We at Sowin Power have developed a complete plug & play power station that is available with a wind turbine, solar panels and batteries. With such a solution, you are well positioned to produce clean electricity both in summer and winter, day and night, all year round. And with the batteries, you can also store the power and use it whenever it suits you. If you are curious and want to get in touch, please contact us.
